PROBLEM:  Should you resign a job you need because
the boss is making you miserable?

DISCUSSION:  A voluntary quit cuts off unemployment
benefits and the right to recover wage losses in litigation.

SOLUTION:  Before you resign, try these options:

A.  CONSULT a mentor or former boss: How do they get
through to your supervisor? Can somebody put in a good
word for you?

B.  CONSULT co-workers you've made to look good. Ask
for "To whom it may concern" letters saying what you did
well and how it helped them do their jobs.

C.  CONSULT your health care provider about your
misery. Ask for diagnosis and recommended adjustments
in schedule, supervisor or duties.

D.  APPLY in writing to transfer to any vacant position.

E.  COERCED RESIGNATION MAY PRESERVE YOUR
RIGHTS. "Asked to choose between resignation (or
disregarding doctor's orders) and being fired, I feel I have
no choice but to resign."

This is no substitute for individualized counseling from an
employment law expert.
